In collaboration with the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers, the brief was to rethink fan making in the modern context in order to prevent the craft from extinction. I began my design inquiry by asking myself, "Why don't I use fans anymore." I had a list of reasons, ranging from living in a technologically advanced world to it being outdated. But, the common element that linked all my reasonings was that if I did own a fan, I'd take it with me to one or two places, but it doesn't fit into every context or occasion I'm going to, and I wouldn't want a bunch of fans lying around my house to suit every occasion either. I decided to make my design problem to create a single fan that could be used in variety of contexts.
So,When I first started thinking about how a fan could be used for any occasion or context, I wanted to include a playful and interactive element, because interactive products are more likely to pique people's interests than a typical dull object. I also wanted to make it accessible to people of all ages so that it could become a regular object in everyone's lives. My final design proposal combined my research knowledge and adaptable design inspirations to create an interchangeable leaf fan. It not only allows you to change the leaf of the fan to a different colour, print, or logo, but it can also be used by kids as drawing boards to create their own fan designs, or each leaf can act as narrative cards for narrating a story, or as a drawing slate for a game of Pictionary for teens and adults, and so on.
